What's the best way to clean an in-ground pool with leaf debris in it?

We have an 18 x 36 grecian in-ground pool. Last fall we not able to close it properly and allowed the bottom of the pool to get covered with leaves. The water level is below the return filtered water line but that is as far as we were able to get.

It seems like removing the leaves with the skimmer would take too long and be extremely inefficient. I got a quote from a local pool service and they wanted $70/hr to clean it and didn't know how long it would take. I would prefer to do it myself and I am open to ideas on how to clean the pool.

I have access to a large pump that can move 50-100 gallons a min... I have a side yard that I can dump water/debris... but I would prefer to filter the water of the larger debris and return it to the pool, then use the Pool Filter to clean that the rest of the way. Do you have any better ideas? Any ideas on how I can filter the water?

I've serviced my own pool, and used pool services. With all the hassle involved, it is much easier to pay the 70/hour and also have them shock and balance the pool chemicals the first time. And then you can stay ahead of it with the chemicals an skimming if you do it every day.
