What chemicals do i need to start up my Above Ground Pool?

We got a fairly large above ground pool last summer and I have no idea what chemicals I need to add to it. Is there a start up kit i need to buy or chlorine or shock? Im going to choose the best answer. Thanks!

I know that Leslie's Pool Supply has a start-up/opening kit you can buy; I'm not sure if any of the big retailers or home improvement shops would have one. www.lesliespool.com is their website; hopefully you have one nearby. If not there should be another pool supply company in your area.

You can also buy water test kits; little strips that you just dip in the water that will change color according to what your chemical levels are like in the pool. You can also take a sample of the water up to the pool supply company and they can test it. You'll get more accurate results this way, plus advice on what steps you should follow if any of your chemicals are off. This includes chlorine, pH, alkalinity, cyanuric acid, Calcium Hardness and in some cases, algae levels.
