Why do you think sometimes there is a large cumulunimbus cloud when the sky is all clear?

Here is my complaint: There is a huge Cumulunimbus cloud in the diatance producing a heavy thundserstorm getting close by to my hometown. You see the sky is all clear, all crystal clear; and a big, big Cumulunimbus cloud remains alive and active and NOTHING else. So i was just wondering why does that happens in some cases? I need METEOROLOGICAL ANSWERS, Any help will be acceptable. Thanks.

What you have is a "capped" environment. A capped environment is when you have a layer of stable air in a otherwise unstable environment. It is this layer that is preventing the unstable air below this layer from moving past this layer to form those big thunder clouds. But for some reason, maybe a local weakness in the cap or local stronger surface heating has allowed one local column of air to break through the cap. This is known as "breaking the cap" and will result in an explosive convection. And that is why you would only see one isolated strong to severe thunderstorm in a otherwise clear sky.
