How do you clean a calligraphy nib ??

I am currently a calligraphy student at college and have just received some of my moms old pens & ink cartridges to practice with. But I am having an awful time cleaning out ink from some of the nibs... I use water to flush it out and cannot seem to get all the ink out. After 10 minutes I still have color coming out... is there any trick or cleaner that would work easier?? Also, does blue ink in a package happen to turn to more of a purple color a few years later?? Thanks!
Im not a calligraphy major... just a student taking a calligraphy class.

and the blue ink that turned purple is a brand by the name of shaeffer... it is just an older version of what we were told to buy for this class.

There is a product called De-Solv-it. Their # is1-800-877-7771. Call them and tell them what the ink is on and if it work.
