how do you stay still in water without drowning?

i know how to swim good for a while but if i stop, i just drown, how do you ppl just stay in water without drowning? not floating like on your back but the one where it looks like your sitting on a chair.. please help, and are there any videos and links or sites that help?
i'm kind of afraid to take swim lessons, becuz im i just turned 16, should i like take adult swim lessons at the swim center? i can swim i just cant float or eggbeat

you have to tread water.. it's kind of like riding a bicycle in the water. take a couple swim lessons.. they're pretty cheap and should help you out a ton. good luck! )
