The chlorine in my pool does not register.

I have a 16 x 32 in ground pool. I balanced the pool water in May but had difficulty getting the chlorine to register. I have gone through 66 lbs. of trichloro-s-triazinetrone as shock this season. Yesterday I put 15 lbs alone. Within the first four hours that I tested the total chlorine was 10, and free cholorine was 10. This morning both register 0. My total hardness is 300, my pH is low. 6.8, my alkalinity is 80, my cyanuric acid is 40. I have placed 3 stingy sticks in my skimmer and have my automatic chlorinator set at high. I did remove the feed tube coming from the chlorinator to see if it was delivering, and it is.
Does anyone have any thoughts, I'm ready to close it for the season because I cannot afford to keep spending $100 on a bucket of trichlor.

Instead of the trichlor try using gallon jugs of regular unscented clorox. Much cheaper plus trichlor is very acidic (your low pH). If you are losing all your chlorine overnight then it seems like you have a high concentration of organics in the pool or ammonia. You lose chlorine two ways- through it sanitizing and via sunlight burnoff. Shock your pool (preferrably with bleach) and test your water at sundown. Then test again first thing in the morning. If you have lost your chlorine it is from organics or a high ammonia level. As previously stated if you are using strips to test the water get rid of them and buy a good liquid test kit. Preferrably the Taylor K 2006. Any Taylor test kit is good but the 2006 has a much better chlorine test. It tests up to 50ppm which is essential when shocking.
