How do you install a suspended ceiling if one dimension of the room is 24 feet?

Main beams for the ceiling grid come in 12' lengths. What if a room is twice that in length? Is there a way to interlock those things together? I know that the secondary 4' pieces lock onto the main beams, though.

First, establish which way the ceiling joist above run. You will use lag eye screws and screw them up into these ceiling joist on about 4' centers.
So first find the ceiling joist above and which direction they run.
Now establish the ceiling height and snap a chalk-line around the perimeter of the ceiling. Now install the wall molding on this chalk-line.
You can either install the main runners starting on the center of the room or offset them equally on both sides of the center line. First find the center and make a pencil mark above the wall mold. Now measure from this center line to the wall and see how many full tiles you will have and how much of a cut tile against the wall.
Now offset 2' ea way from the center line and see how many full tiles and how much of a cut tile you will have against the wall. Whichever gives you the best looking cut against the wall is the pattern I would use.
Main runners come in 12' lengths, however you must do all your layout and measuring from the slots in the main runners to insure they are all in line.
To do this you need to find the center of the room the direction Parallel with the ceiling joist above. Do the same measuring from the center to see what cut tile works best against the wall. Now when you find that best measurement put a mark on each end of the wall and put a string up from these 2 marks.
Now as you start cutting the main runners - you must measure from one of the slots and cut end of main runner so this slot ends up on this string line. You want to stagger the joints in your main runners so the next line of main runners does not start off with the same length pc. As long as you measure from any slot on the main runner - they will all be in line. Hang all the starting pcs. of main runner from the end wall. Use ceiling wire to hang them from the lay eyes so they are level. Either pop rivet the cut end of the main runner to the wall molding or tie them back to a nail above the wall mold so they stay tight against the wall mold.
Now start filling in the 4' t's out as far as you can until you need to finish out hanging the main runners. This keeps the ceiling from flopping around if it is tied tight to the wall and you fill in the first parts of the 4' t's.
The important thing is always measure from a slot in the main runners.
Let's say your string line is 16" out from the end of the wall. Now you measure where your first main runner will go and it is 16+1/4" from the string to the wall. It may vary as the end wall might have a bow in it or be a little off.
Measure from any slot on the main runner that is at least 16+1/4" from the end. Cut the main runner here.
Now your next main runner starting pc. needs to be cut from a slot that is at least 18" -24" back further than this first pc. so the joints are staggered. Find a slot a little further down the main runner and now measure from the string to the wall where this next main runner is going to be placed. Let's say it measures 16+1/2" at that point.
Find a slot about 32" from the end and measure 16+1/2" from this slot and cut the main runner at that point. Place this main runner in place hanging it with wire from the lay eye in the ceiling above.'
Remember once you mark where your main runners are going - level up and put marks on the ceiling and snap chalk-line across the old ceiling. You lay eyes will screw into the existing ceiling joist on this chalk-line where it intersects the ceiling joists on about 4' centers. You can always add lag eyes as needed.
Keep filling in the 4' t's as you go which helps keep the grid all tight.
If you want to be more like the pro's you can buy small rubber tip grid clamps. These small clamps hold the end of the cut main runner to the wall mold until you get the grid all completed. This eliminates pop rivets or tieing main runners to end wall to keep it in place.
The main runners all interlock into each other.
Remember you can either use a 2'x2' grid pattern or a 2'x4' grid pattern.
