Heat Pump Small
Oil filled heater and ceramic versus Heat Pump on unit. Which is better?

I have purchased two ceramic heaters and an oil filled heater for use this coming winter. We have a heat pump on our unit and it eats us up in the winter time with heating bills.
The heaters that I bought all have thermostats and can be set at 750 or 1500 watts. I did use the oil filled radiant heater some last year and it seemed to help with the bills but the back rooms were cool so I bought the ceramic heaters to use this coming year.
We have a small 2 bedroom, one bath house. Less than 900 sq feet.

If you stop using the heat pump you will eliminate the operation of a pump and a fan. Both the pump and the fan use electricity. The electric heaters should be 100 percent efficient but may not give you the same type of comfort. But different comfort does not mean neccesarily less comfort. Saving money is also comforting.

The other ways to save are insulation, siding, good windows, no drafts during the winter, and the lowest comfortable setting on the t-stat. If everybody in the home dresses warmer then maybe during the day the t-stat can be kept even lower.

How to Troubleshoot a Heat Pump and Install a Geothermal Heat Pump

A heat pump can provide warm air to a house even when the temperature outside is below freezing. I have said before and I'll say it again: refrigeration is the single greatest invention ever invented by man. At least Thomas Edison never tried to claim the credit that he invented that.

As far as I know. What the heck, the Jerk of Menlo Park probably DID try to claim credit for inventing refrigeration. The mechanism by which a heat pump works exploits the tendency of liquid to absorb heat as it expands and turns into a gas. The heat pump then provides warmth by compressing that gas into a liquid. As with all scientific appliances, things can occasionally go wrong with a heat pump and it pays to know what to look for.

Check the thermostat when the pump is not running--it may be set too high. If the heat pump kicks on when you lower the thermostat, you should not have any other problems.

Check the electrical disconnect switch on a heat pump if the thermostat is in working order. Heat pumps are usually equipped with a reset switch located in the outside cabinet unit.

Clean the outdoor coil and check both the filter and the blower unit if your heat pump's cycles of operation seem shorter. Check the outdoor coil for any foreign object lodged in the coil creating an obstruction--this can cause a short cycle. Clean the filter to help improve efficiency. Replace the blower if you notice that the heat pump's cycles are shorter than normal and the intensity of air being blown seems corrupted.

Look for heavy ice accumulation on a heat pump as a sign that it is not properly defrosting. If there is no ice at all or the defrost cycle is short, check to make sure that the pump is not stuck in cooling mode.

Reduce uneven heating of your house by balancing the system of ducts running through the house. Check that dampers are open and free from obstructions. Use a vacuum to clear away dust clogs in the duct system.

Do not attempt to restart the heat pump immediately if the power has been off for more than an hour at temperatures lower than 50 degrees. This is a time delay factor built into the heat pump that allows the heating element to properly warm up.

Should you install a geothermal heat pump? The answer to that question is difficult to answer. Since every homes HVAC layout, structural design, architecture, position relative to the sun, tree coverage and a million other factors are different, it is hard to say without the consultation of professional advice.

However, I can tell you this. There are just as many different types of heat pumps as there are reasons why or why not you should have one. But as a general rule, heat pumps fall into two basic categories. Air-source and ground source. Where it gets really confusing is the many differing branches and designs that take off from these two categories.

The main difference between the two categories of heat pumps is that an air-source heat pump uses the inert heat already in the home. This works very similar to the same way your cars air conditioning works when you switch the vent from the outside air to the inside air. This type of heat pump works most efficiently in warmer climates without severe winters. In extremely cold conditions, an air-source heat pump is not efficient enough.

On the other hand a geothermal heat pump uses the inert energy of the earth and its constant temperature. The benefit of this system is that it works both ways. It efficiently heats and cools. The main problem with geothermal heat pumps are the site constraints. Many home lots just aren't big enough for a geothermal system. That is why it is important to get several estimates from a licensed contractor.

A geothermal heat pump may have its limitations, but there are many more benefits that come with geothermal than with air-source. For instance, a geothermal heat pump with an EnergyStar rating or higher can run up to 30 percent cheaper than a conventional air-source heat pump.

When compared to a fossil fuel burning boiler or furnace, the geothermal heat pump uses a small fraction more electrical energy than a boiler or furnace uses. The difference lies in the cost of fossil fuels which is near 90 percent of the costs plus the additional electrical use. Geothermal heat pumps burn only fossil fuels that are generated from its little electrical use. And with the huge leaps daily in alternative power sources, choosing a geothermal heat pump is an economically and environmentally wise choice.
