I need to replace my main Drain Cover but the water heater is too close to turn with a wrench,whats my options

If u don't want to pull the W/H out. U can caulk the main drain cover to seal out the methane gas from leaking out. Still the best way is to get assess to the drain cover and use proper tool to remove/ replace the cover.

Drain and Vent System

The residential Drain-West-Vent (DWV) is carrying all of our water waste and other small solids, outside of the house.

Installing an additional DWV will have to be consulted with a professional to make sure it is done according to city codes and specifications.

The residential drain system is divided into two: Main Line, and secondary drain line. In both cases, ventilation system is installed with 1.5 – 2 inch pipe; which will take odors to the roof.

Our main line, the one which carries most of the waste outside of the premises, is made of a 3 – 4 inch pipe in diameter, which will end in the city main sewer line.

Every part of the drain system in the house is connected to a Vent system, which will allow the water flow inside the pipe; otherwise it will gurgle as it slowly empties to the city sewage.

In some of the older houses, the main drain line is made of a casted iron, and has been there for 80 years or more. In these homes, the drain and main line (which carry fresh water) are made of galvanized steel, with much more possibilities of corrosion and rust.

In the early 70s, a new plastic pipe was introduced the ABS (Acrylonitrille-Butadiene-Styrene) for the Drain usage.  The ABS has become the most used Drain Pipe in the United States due to its resistance and unaffected by commonly used household chemicals - including drain and bowl cleaners, such as:  Tide detergent, Soilax cleanser,  Borax cleaners, Calgon water softener, Ammonia 5% solution, Renuzit spot remover, Drano, Liquid Sani-flush, Liquid Plumber, Lysol bowl cleaner, Vanish bowl cleaner,  Liquid Vanish bowl cleaner, Sno-Bol bowl cleaner.

The ABS and the PVC have become the preferred pipes for the engineers that are writing the codes for the cities and the counties.

In rare cases, only in restaurants that are using a significant amount of hot water, a 2 inch copper drain will be recommended. All the drain pipes in the house need to be sloped, and codes are indicating it should be ¼ inch per foot, so water can run freely through.

Special fitting for the sweeping turns are needed, rather than abrupt turns, so waste does not get trapped in the pipes.

Each Main line and Secondary line should have a CLEANOUT, which is a temporary removable plug, which its purpose is to be able to unclog the pipe or to be inspected with special cameras.

Main Drain Line – All of the house water waste travels the drain pipe to the main Drain Line, which will end at the municipal sewage system or in septic tanks (rural areas and farms). Plumbers still find clay pipe and other porous materials.

Tree roots will follow any pipe leak and will eventually block the broken clay drain. Solutions in these cases will be to replace the whole main line.

Vent Pipe System

Are made of ABS or PVC and are connected to every drain pipe in the house. Its main function is to permit the water to flow smoothly without gurgling. The vent pipe system will eventually end up through the roof. Another important function is to carry odors out of the house. Every drain and plumbing fixture must be connected to vent, which will supply the drain pipes AIR from the outside. All vents pipes will be connected to the one that eventually will end up outside, usually at the roof of the house to the main vent stack. Most of the cities in the US have very similar plumbing codes, and have similar rules, codes how and where the vent pipes can connect to the stack and how far they should travel.  The "Wet" part of the drain pipe can not be used as a "Vent". One of the ways to check if the Vent is working right, is to let the water run (Toilet sinks etc...) and if the drainpipes gurgles, you need to call a professional plumber for an inspection and for diagnostic of the problem. Some of the problem could be: A vent stopped and need to be cleared; some of the vent pipes are installed incorrectly. In both cases a master plumber could resolve the problem.
