Problems with the pathfinder tool in illustrator, help!?

I am making a website. I have a swirl shape overlapping the rectangle. Now i want to cut that swirl into pieces so I can move it around. However when I select the swirl and the rectangle and hit divide the line completely disappears. Is it not possible to use the pathfinder with a line, does it have to be a compound shape only? Please help, thank you.

There's a lot that can be done here. it does divide the object, but since it's a stroke, it makes it invisible. You could add a color to the stroke to see where the divide is.

The most obvious idea I can think of would be to select the swirl and go to Object > Expand Appearance so it will be an object. Then used divide.

If you need the rectangle in tact, just copy it (cmd/ctrl C) and paste it in front (cmd/ctrl F) and play with that one instead. It sounds like you know a little bit about Illustrator, so I'm sure this will help you out.
