Pool Cartridge Filter
What are people's feelings on the best in-ground Pool Filter for a large pool?

My pool is 40x20 with a 10x20 lap lane extension and will need a new filter. The pool company recommends a DE filter (Jandy) and another person that is in the pool business recommended to me a cartridge filter. He says that they are much improved from older versions, require no backwashing, and do a very good job of filtering.
Just trying to get some opinions on the pluses/minuses of the different fitler types and brands. Thanks
ps- its a Vinyl Liner pool with a heater. there are trees near by. And I just had a salt water system installed. If any of that plays into the equation. Thanks again

In your situation I would recommend getting a larger Hayward sand filter. I've experienced DE filters when the pool had trees around it and you will be backwashing it at least once per week during the spring and early summer, then again late in the summer. DE filters down to micron sized particles so it picks up dust, pollen, etc. Every time you backwash a DE filter you have to replace the DE medium so the cost is recurring.

A cartridge filter, while vastly improved now, still don't filter as well as I'd like to see. No you don't have to backwash them, but you either have to replace them as they dirty or you have to keep them on a cleaning schedule (have one or two on hand that you've hosed off and soaked in bleach solution for 24 hours and then dried). This keeps the cost of cartridges down but still requires replacing periodically as the filter medium breaks down from the repeated high bleach concentrations when cleaning them.

Sand filters are effective and become more effective as they get dirty. You backwash them for a couple minutes when the pressure rises 10-12psi over normal operating pressure, then rinse them for 30 seconds or so. The sand does eventually wear down as it rubs against itself in the filter but I've seen sand last for well over 5 years before.

I'm not fond of pool industry consumables therefore I don't recommend the first two filter types. Of course the choice is yours but if it were my pool it would be run on a sand filter.
