sand filter for an above ground Swimming Pool?

I have been using a cartridge filter for two years on my 24' round pool. The replacement filters are kind of $ so I have decided to change over to the sand filter. Someone I know told me he had trouble with his putting small amounts of sand in his pool sometimes. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem.

The sand most likely came from an outside source. Been running a sand filter in my pool for 5 years, and haven't noticed any sand from my filter. Kid's feet, oh yes.
