I'm a Swimming Pool service technician-I've installed well over 100 pumps and motors but I've never seen?

this happen before. I was replacing a Hayward Tri Star 3hp motor for a customer. I removed the old one and installed a new one with the Shaft Seal. When I started it up-it sounded fine as usual. However after about 5-10 minutes somehing happened that I had never come across before. There was a dull pop and a hissing sound like air running out if a tire. Shortly afterward the breaker tripped.
I left it off a few munutes and tries to restart but it kept tripping the breaker. I left and planned on ordering another motor but was cusrious and called Hayward. They said it sounded like I had a defective Capacitor that caused the hissing sound. My question is-is this likely a fluke and was just a defective capacitor or is it an indicator of something else. My customer ran the exact same motor for years with no problem and the replacement motor is identical?
Also, would it be better to just put a new motor on or to replace the capacitor as Hayward suggested?

I agree with Hayward...it is a fluke...the capacitor helps the motor to get up to speed by storing energy and then releasing it into the motor windings. If it fails the motor won't run at top power...it will "rotor-lock" and eventually burn out from over-drawing amps & overheating.
Easier to just replace the motor if it's new.
