Ariston A1636
I bought my Ariston A1636 from currys in may 2005 for ?269.98 including delivery. It was in a sale, ?150 off. So it was originally ?419.98 including delivery. When it first came out at currys in 2004 it was ?519.98 including delivery so I got it for just over half price. An absolute bargain. The things that attracted me were it's fast spin, the reports of Ariston being a reliable make and the fact that the A1636 model uses the same Brushless induction motor that the hotpoint super silent models use. On a wash cycle you can't hear it working at all (47 decibels maximum) and on the fastest spin I wouldn't call it super silent, but It is almost certainly quieter than 95% of Washing machines on the market, even though at 1,600 rpm, it is one of the fastest. The only washer that is quieter on the spin cycle is An LG direct drive washer, like the one my mum has, But this ariston is almost as quiet on the fastest spin and just as quiet on the wash cycle and upto about 1,000 rpm as an LG.
It is a 1,600 rpm model, so gets clothes really dry (Residual moisture content is only 44% after a spin, compared to 59% for a 1,000 rpm washer) and it washes and rinses clothes brilliantly, although the cycles are a bit too long, but there is a time saver button, which reduces programme times by 30%, so it's not really much of a problem. And there is super wash button too, but seen as this machine washes clothes brilliantly anyway, I hardly use it much. I live on my own so only use my washer once every 7-10 days. The drum capacity is 53 litres, Big enough for a 6kg or 13.2lb wash load, which means I don't have to use it too often, saving water and electricity. It uses 60 litres of water and 1.14kwh on a typical cycle. Not Quite the most economical washer around, But still very good, Good enough for a Triple A rating (A rated for energy efficiency, Wash performance and Spin performance). It also has a delay timer, although I never use it and has fully electronic controls and lets you know what stage of the program it's in
The washer feels reasonably well built too. Not as well built as a miele exactly, but then again no washer is as well built as a miele and considering this washer originally cost ?500 when it came out, It feels just as well built as what you'd expect. And seen as the motor is Brushless (Although still is belt driven) I won't need to fanny about getting brushes replaced as there aren't any. There is only one annoyance really and that's when the load is even only slightly unbalanced it keeps stopping and trying to redistribute the load instead of going straight to the spin, but when it does that a lot on the final spin and admittedly it's only happened on 3 occasions, I turn the machine off and redistribute the load by hand and put the fast spin on and it just goes straight on to the spin, so It doesn't cause any problems, it's just a bit annoying at times, but All in all, this is a very good washer, an absolute bargain, even if I'd have paid ?150 more for it, it would have been worth it.
Hotpoint-ariston c 3v m5 Our last washing machine packed up and we went on the hunt for a new one, looked around some of the options on offer, and settled on this one. It’s a condensing model which was great, no plumbing in a hose to vent or messing around with piping. Had a good selection of programs, and wash temperature easily selected.
It worked fine for the first year, and then the dryer packed up. We only ever really used the dryer in winter and then it was mostly just underwear washes so I can’t even say it was used a lot. There are only 2 of us in the house, and we’d do 1 load a week with the dryer. Basically the heating element seems to have gone on it. Unfortunately it was out of warranty and we were not really ready to shell out for repairs or replacements… so we brought an extra clothes horse and calculated a bit of extra drying time into our weekend washes. It’s another 6 months down the line and discovered a second problem, there seems to be no removable filter on the machine, and the lint that has accumulated from washed clothes is now finding its way back on to the clothes, I’ve been though the manual front cover to back, and no where does it mention anything about a filter. I’ve cleaned all the parts as instructed in the manual but this problem still seems to persist. I remember my last washing machine had a slide in-out filter just under the door, but this one has nothing.
In its defense it is still running, it does still wash, It is now very loud when it spins out, but the spin is very effective at removing most of the water from the clothes. It has also managed to remove 2 bra under wires in its life time, so make of that what you will. A possible problem I’ve noticed as well is that it is not very easy to service, on our last machine it was possible to remove the front panel and get access to the pump which was required once to remove a penny that jammed it, this model is completely enclosed, so I imagine once out of warranty servicing is not too easy.
