Problems with Diatomaceous Earth Filter?

My roomate took apart our diatomaceous filter and cleaned out some old gunk. We put back the filter housing together but are now having trouble getting the pump to prime.

I am following these directions:

-I wasnt sure how far to loosen the Air Relief valve, so I removed it completely.
-We switched the filter to "Filter"
-Filled the pump strainer pot and shut it
-Turned on the filter pump
-Waited 30 minutes and no water had come out of the top of the filter assembly. (I did not know about the 4 minutes part, hopefully the filter pump isn't broken.) So I popped off the pump strainer cover and noticed it was very close to empty and added pool water with a bucket which dissapeared quickly (into the filter pump). I noticed no water was coming into the strainer inlet from the pool so I shut it off.

-I don't know what to try now. What am I doing wrong?

You are on the right track just close the pool valves to 50% except the deep drain valve leave open 100% stick a hose in the pump pot and fill it until it overflows then replace cap and start pump if it does not start within the four minutes then repeat.
Keep the air vent closed until you get the pump running then bleed the air it will not hurt anything doing this.
This may have to be repeated several times.
