Why is the hp of a diesel engine rated only half that of an electric engine to power a hydraulic pump?


You need a 20hp diesel engine to power a hydraulic motor, while a 10-hp electric motor will do the same job.

the reason for this is that the internal combustion engine has a pronounced lack of flexibility in its torque band. in practice this tends to be less of an issue with diesels since they have to breath very well at high speeds as well as starting speeds but the torque is inconsistent none the less. electric motors often have limited torque at certain speeds as well but its not as big of an issue most often. there is also the matter of loss of power due to higher air temperature and altitude. the rule is usually to use an engine that will put out enough power even at almost 10000 ft in warm weather. also there is the fact that power will be lost as the engine wears out. but i must say i would guess that a 15hp diesel would do the job of a 10 hp motor ok im not sure why 20 is needed. its good to have extra though.

The higher the rating, the more efficient the device is. One important point to note is that just because the unit has a high SEER rating, does not mean it will have a high HSPF rating.

If the main usage is t o cool your home because you live in warm climate then focus on a pump that has a high SEER rating. The standard conventional heat pump is cheaper than the newer Inverter heat pumps. If doing a heat pump comparison, make sure you compare conventional styles to conventional styles and inverter types to other inverter types. If you like you can compare conventional to inverter, just keep in mind the newer inverter types are more expensive.

Inverter heat pumps are new to the market and because of their sophisticated control features; you can have closer temperature control than the conventional style pumps. When doing a heat pump comparison, you will find that the inverter heat pumps are more advanced but they cost quite a bit more.
