Sand Filter System

How to keep sand out of aquarium filter?
I recently switched over to playground sand in my freshwater aquarium. I've cleaned the sand in advance and then added it. The problem I am having is (probably due to the air stones or circulation) sand is constantly getting into the filtration system and damaging the motor. I am on my 3 filtration system in 2 months.
My goal is to somehow stop sand from being sucked up the inlet tube and damaging the motors without plugging up the intake. I've tried various types of mesh-like fabrics only to have them clog or break down in the water. I have not found any type of filter that I could just slide over the inlet. Someone recommended using panty hose material, but I do not know.
Does anyone have any suggestions out there?
put a piece of filter sponge into the intake tube of the filter. you'll just have to change/clean the sponge piece periodically.
