I just backwashed my sand filter, I now see sand on the ground by the discharge pipe. What is wrong?

The filter is 5 years old as is the sand. It used to stay at about 20 PSI now it's at about 30 even after a backwash.

if the backwash pressure is too high the sand bed gets stirred up and you expect to lose some sand to the drain outlet.

The one I had recommended opening the filter each year and removing the sand , or most of it , and refilling with fresh filter sand .
