Winter Care For Swimming Pool Covers?
I am a new pool owner and have realized that once the pool is covered you have to bail off the rain water. My question is - how do you take care of the cover when there's a big snow or ice event? Any advise or suggestions from experienced pool owners?
If this is an inground, you drained off the pool to just below the returns. At that level, the pool can just be left, with no adverse effects on the cover. It won't collect enough preciptation to overflow unless you choose to open it in late summer. If the cover is sized correctly, it won't pull in. The water/ice/snow on it displaces the water underneath, which in turn allows it to still float on the pool surface and not pull in.
If this is an above ground, those covers are usually secured by cable and aren't really large enough to sit on the surface properly. Just before ice in, siphon off (or pump) half the cover water off. Leave some on to help keep that cover from whipping off in a wind.
The previous poster mentioned putting empty containers under the cover. For an Above Ground Pool, they are called pool pillows and sure, you can do that if you want some added peace of mind. But that's all it does, it really does nothing to help the pool physically, from wall bulge (above ground pool) as the containers get pushed out of the ice and don't take expansion anyway. If anything, having the cover jut up out of the ice, just increases it's chance of being cut by the ice which I have seen happen (rare) by a couple owners that employed them.
