How do I change the sand in a Tagelus Deluxe Pool Sand filter? How do I open the top?
We live where there are a lot of Cottonwood trees and we know previous owner did not us a sock on his filter and check it often to keep cotton out.
Pool & fikter is approx. 4trs old. It is Baquacil. Just think we should change the sand.
I'd like to know why. The only time you need to change the sand is if you are switching from Bromine/Baquacil to chlorine, if you are getting sand leakage from the filter through to the pool, or if it's VERY old.
You normally never have to change the sand in the filter until it starts to wear down to sizes small enough to allow it to pass through the laterals or the above applies.
However, if you insist on changing the sand then you will need a wet/dry shop vac to remove the sand, be careful that you don't push down on the sand bed too hard or you will risk breaking the laterals that are buried inside there.
Once you get the sand out (you don't have to get every last grain out) then fill the tank half way (or at least 3 inches over the laterals) and pour in the sand. This will help the sand settle around the laterals without placing pressure on them and breaking them.
*EDIT*
Make sure you use the Baquacil stripping solution prior to changing the sand, this will get rid of the sludge build up you have in the plumbing and will make getting the sand out much easier. And yes, with a Baquacil pool it's recommended to change the sand every 3-4 years so you are making the right choice.
